Aikido Croydon

Literally translated as “The Way of Harmonious Spirit”, Aikido is a non-aggressive form of self-defence Developed between the 1920s and 1930s by Morihei Ueshiba, it is relatively modern martial art derived from older styles of Jiu-jitsu. One of the most famous practitioners of Aikido is movie star Steven Seagal, a 7th dan black belt and the only foreigner to open an Aikido dojo in Japan.

Like Wing Chun, Aikido aims to use an opponent’s force against them. However, whilst Aikido focuses mainly on locks and throws with a view to restrain the opponent, Wing Chun is a strike-oriented form (a quicker and more effective form of self-defence).
