Judo Croydon

Judo is literally translated as “The Gentle Way”. A relatively modern martial art, Judo was created in 1882 by Jigoro Kano predominantly as a sport. Its main feature is its competitive element, with the objective being taking down one’s opponent with a throw, immobilizing them with a grappling manoeuvre, or forcing them into submission with joint locks or choke holds. Kicks and strikes are incorporated in fixed forms or kata, but are not allowed in competition. This sporting element makes it less effective as a self-defence form compared to Wing Chun Kung Fu, which relies on striking, a quicker and more direct form of self-defence.
